If the child does not respond or is very sleepy, sucking reflex can be stimulated by gently touching the child on the cheek and lips with the fingertips. Then the child will turn his head and seek the nipple with his mouth open. Do not touch both cheeks while, because this will confuse the child.

The same kind of stimulus can be used if the child shows that breast slowly or falling asleep while breast. The infant should be kept in the same breast as long as possible before switching to the other. Many people think that 20 minutes is enough time before switching sides. Is the baby suckling effectively?

For the baby suckle properly, you must have the right nipple into his mouth. All the nipple and the brown circle (halo) should disappear into the baby’s mouth, otherwise you can not create a gap between the tongue and the back of the soft palate. If the child is only the tip of the nipple sucking, not empty the breast and nipples may ulcerate.

To get the baby to suck again, put the tip carefully the little finger in the corner of his mouth. The child will leave the nipple and feeding can start again. Have the baby opens his mouth (gently tap his cheek) to start suckling.

How to make the baby release the breast?

It’s a good idea to get into the habit of removing the child’s chest gently. Removing the child while nursing, the nipples quickly ulcerate. However, if you place the tip of your little finger in the corner of baby’s mouth, it will automatically open the mouth. This will break the vacuum created by the child in his mouth to suckle.
